Abstract

As solutes partition differently between the solid and the liquid phases, compositional nonhomogeneities occur at the macro- and microscale level. The microscale nonhomogeneities are termed as microsegregations. Accurate tracking of the solutal field during solidification is required for a comprehensive theoretical treatment of interface morphology. Assessment of microsegregation occurring in solidifying alloys is also important because it influences mechanical properties.
