Notes
- 1.
Convicted long-term prisoners are appointed as prison warders based on certain criteria (Maharashtra Prison Manual 1979).
- 2.
Indian Penal Code, 1860, is a document which lists offences and punishments that a person committing any crime is charged with.
- 3.
According to the Maharashtra Prison Manual 1979, inmates have to be subjected to preliminary physical examination to check whether the prisoner is suffering from any contagious disease. The NHRC guidelines require that all State Governments and prison administrations should ensure medical examination of all the prison inmates prior to admission in accordance with the proforma devised by it and the monthly reports be communicated to the Commission.
