Abstract

Antibiotics are commonly used in the intensive care units. In critically ill patients, empirical antimicrobial therapy should be always administered when the suspected infection is serious. Avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use and optimizing the administration of antimicrobial agents may improve patient outcome and minimize risks for bacterial resistance.
