Acute Care Surgery Handbook

Abstract

This chapter’s main objective is to assist the acute care surgeon in clearing his thoughts when confronted with an acute abdomen on a female patient and, therefore, facilitate diagnostic and emergency care management. It is paramount that the acute care surgeon finds himself prepared for different kinds of emergency scenarios including those involving obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) situations. In such setting, it is important to first recognize the chief complaints that motivated the patient to call for emergency assistance, as many other diagnoses different than OB/GYN causes could appear. Figure 13.1 shows the most common differential diagnosis for acute abdominal pain on a female patient.
