Abstract
In this introductory chapter, we inaugurate the concept of other-oriented hope by means of a poignant example from the writing of Viktor Frankl. Next, we argue that much of hope research and theory has focused upon self-oriented hope, to the relative neglect of other-oriented hope. We then set the stage for subsequent chapters which will: situate other-oriented hope within the broader concept of other-interest; define and identify the attributes of other-oriented hope; examine evidence for other-oriented hope; identify theories pertinent to other-oriented hope; acknowledge concepts which overlap with, but can nonetheless be differentiated from, other-oriented hope; and discuss future research and clinical applications of other-oriented hope.
