Abstract

This starting chapter aims to introduce the main mechanics behind pendulum-like motion, by bridging the gap between theory and its applicability in sports. To that end, we start by presenting a brief historical background of this well-known physics case study steered by the legacy of Galileo Galilei, thus showing how this phenomenon was innovative for the evolution of science in several research areas. This is followed by a description of some sport modalities that intrinsically benefit from a pendulum-like motion, paying particular attention to golf putting.
