Abstract
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the United States. Widespread variability in biliary anatomy can make this procedure quite challenging. These anatomic variations result from the complex nature of biliary system development. This chapter focuses on biliary system embryology, anatomy of the liver, gallbladder and extrahepatic bile ducts, normal physiology of bile production and metabolism, and the natural history of gallstone formation.
