Abstract

The architecture of epithelial cells comprises the separation of the plasma membrane into two separately composed compartments, the apical and the basolateral membrane. This concept is maintained by a sorting and transport machinery which verifies targeting of lipid and protein components to the correct membrane domain. Different intracellular routes, a heterogeneous population of sorting signals, and cellular factors associated with polarized trafficking are discussed.
