Magnetic Resonance Enterography

Endoscopy in Small Bowel Disorders

Abstract

Imaging of the small intestine has traditionally relied on the barium small bowel follow-through and enteroclysis examinations. However, in recent years cross-sectional imaging modalities have become the radiological modalities of choice for evaluating patients with suspected small bowel disorders. Cross-sectional imaging modalities are ideally suited to assess the macroscopic features, luminal and extramural abnormalities of the small intestine. As a result computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging—particularly when coupled with the enteroclysis or enterographic techniques—have become the preferred radiological modality for diagnostic imaging of the small intestine.

An advantage of MR imaging over CT is the absence of ionizing radiation, which makes it an ideal modality as the indolent nature of inflammatory bowel disease leads to frequent imaging examinations. Another advantage of an enterographic examination is that nasojejunal intubation is not required as for an enteroclysis examination, making it more acceptable to patients. MR enterography (MRE) plays a significant role in the diagnostic imaging and follow-up of patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
