Abstract
Houston has been the energy capital of the world for many years. A large portion of its economy depends on energy sector. However, it has experienced several oil busts in the past decades. There are questions about the economic resilience of Houston: Is Houston ready for the next bust? Should Houston further diversify its economy? This paper will analyze the economic data and examine the economic resilience in Houston. Spatial data are analyzed and a GIS-based risk model is developed to evaluate the resilience of Houston’s neighborhoods. The risk model takes into account multiple factors such as the house ownership in the neighborhood, the availability of public transportation, and the average education level of its residents, etc. The purpose of this GIS-based risk model is to help us understand the resilience of a neighborhood in case of another oil bust in Houston.
