Abstract
Robert James Graves (1795–1853) is best known for his classical description of the syndrome that bears his name. In 1835, he described three female patients with palpitations, exophthalmos, and goiter. This clinical observation was one of many that he delivered in a series of lectures and publications. His skills as a lecturer were legendary, with no fewer than 140 in attendance at his daily scheduled presentations. Despite the fact that he is most associated with Graves’ disease of the thyroid gland, his biggest contribution to medicine was that as an educator.
