Abstract
Doctor Charles (Charlie) Mayo was one of the two famous Mayo brothers who founded the Mayo Clinic in conjunction with their father Doctor William Worrall Mayo. Charlie was a true general surgeon whose surgical expertise ranged from general surgery and neurosurgery to orthopedic and gynecologic surgery. He had the gift of being able to attract the brightest minds to join the group soon to be known as the Mayo Clinic. In addition, he possessed a business mind which was ahead of the times. Many of the business practices he set into motion then are still followed today 150 years later in the largest group practice in the world.
It is of interest that he is credited as having operated on the first pheochromocytoma in the USA in 1926. This event is detailed in this chapter.
