Abstract
Frank Lahey was a gifted general surgeon best known for his expertise in thyroidectomy. He was a strong proponent for the intraoperative localization of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and his superb thyroidectomy outcomes were extraordinary for his time. As a teacher, he influenced countless physicians and cultivated the careers of many surgeons. Lastly, he was the founder of the Lahey Clinic, which set the standard for collaborative multidisciplinary care.
Those who knew and loved Frank will remember him as a great leader and a lovable man; a surgeon who seemed at his best when facing the impossible; a friend whose whole-hearted welcome was offered alike to the distinguished visitor and the humble seeker after knowledge. Until the end, he was skillful, kindly, and vital. As such he will remain in our memory.
