Classically, one thought of a black hole as a perfect absorber: Matter can fall into it but nothing can come out of it. In the early seventies, Bekenstein argued that this asymmetry can lead to the violation of second law of thermodynamics unless we associate an entropy with the black hole which is proportional to its area.
