Abstract
Radio emission from the Sun was discovered during World War II but no one could do much about that until hostilities ended. It turned out that the sun and the planets emit thermal and non-thermal radiation. Using the radio telescopes to transmit radar pulses, the reception of the echoes by the same dishes allows planetary surfaces to be mapped.
