Notes

  1. 1.

Adjuvant System 04 (ASO4) is a combination of aluminum hydroxide (enhances the antibody response) and monophosphoryl lipid A (a TLR4 agonist derived from bacterial cell walls).

  2. 2.

In the United States, the Proxmire Amendment is a law passed in 1976 that curbed the ability of the FDA to regulate vitamin dosage. In 1989, an outbreak of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome occurred among L-tryptophan users (caused by impurities in the supplement). It led to the death of 38 individuals and produced adverse reactions in 1500 people. When the U.S. FDA was perceived as heavy-handed in response to the incident, industry lobbyists applied pressure on lawmakers to protect their products from regulation.
