Abstract
During the last 50 years astronomers all around the world have calculated the present population of Near Earth Objects (asteroids plus comets) and they have also evaluated the present impact rate of those objects on Earth. The only way to estimate the same impact rate numbers in the geological past timescales is by discovering and studying in detail the real population of well-preserved terrestrial impact craters and structures.
