Intraoperative Ultrasound in Liver Surgery for Benign Tumors

Abstract

Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) plays a relevant role in the clinical practice of the hepatic surgeon providing additional diagnostic findings otherwise not clearly predictable by preoperative imaging. Despite widespread availability and ongoing advantages of imaging modality, the differentiation between benign and malignant lesion remains a challenge. Thus, the indication for resection of benign liver tumor is still controversial. However, in patients candidate for surgery, IOUS serves as a reference standard compared to preoperative imaging and plays a considerable role in operative decision-making and in differential diagnosis process discriminating between new pathologic detected lesions and non-pathologic findings.
