Comorbid Psychiatric Disorders in Schizophrenia: More than Just a Chance Co-occurrence

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

Although we often study patients with schizophrenia and make treatment inferences thereupon in study populations that exclude patients with comorbid psychiatric conditions, the latter group is a clinical conundrum and is more common than represented in clinical practice. This “greater than chance” co-occurrence is not by chance. Reasons for this are enumerated in this chapter. There are also clear implications for understanding and treatment of these complex presentations. This chapter sets the stage and focuses on core themes as exemplified by obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
