Abstract

Cannabis is the most widely used recreational drug in the world. Cannabis has euphorigenic and anxiolytic properties. Smoking is the most efficient means of delivering cannabis to the central nervous system, where the dose may be titrated by adjusting the frequency and depth of inhalation. Medical application of cannabis is controversial and illegal in most countries. Cannabis is not approved as a medication by the United States Food and Drug Administration. However, some states permit medical treatment with low-dose synthetic cannabinoids for management of pain and nausea in chronically ill patients. Methods for administration include ingestion of extracts or oral capsules, smoking, or inhalation of vaporized fumes.
