Abstract
Innovation, a principal IBM value, is becoming more interdisciplinary, more collaborative, more global, and more open. This paper discusses the essence of collaborative innovation, which is built on four pillars: people, methodology, structures, and platforms. In addition, it covers the motivation behind innovation, followed by a discussion on its changing nature. Some examples from IBM Research, including the Global Technology Outlook process and services innovation, further illustrate how IBM drives “innovation that matters to the world”. This paper focuses on IBM’s vision for a smarter planet as well as cloud computing as a collaborative innovation platform.
