Abstract
Medical and nutritional counseling for obesity is essential for the management of the disease, and schools, families, industry, media, makers of public policy, and health care professionals must actively and collectively participate to make an impact. This is especially true because lifestyle changes can be very difficult in an obesogenic environment. The objective of obesity treatment is to reduce at least 5–10 % of the initial weight in 6 months. As previously discussed in other chapters, even this level of weight loss is associated with a significant decrease in cardiovascular risk factors, can prevent or delay the development of type 2 diabetes, and improves other health-related consequences [1].
