Abstract

After an 11-year struggle, the Republic of Mexico achieved independence from Spain in 1821. Mexico claimed the territory from the north 42nd parallel (the south border of the Oregon Territory) all the way south to the 16th parallel at Guatemala and the Bay of Tiajuanapec. The northern half of this Mexican Republic was sparsely populated and organized into three large territories: Alta California, Nuevo Mexico, and Tejas-Coahuila. Administrative capitals were established in Monterrey, California, and Santa Fe, Nuevo Mexico. In 1836, American settlers in Mexican Tejas-Coahuila (Texas) staged a military separation from Mexico. Mexico could not suppress the rebellion, and the Republic of Texas was formed. After 10 years, the Republic of Texas was bankrupt and wished to join the USA. When the republic was accepted in late 1845, Mexico was drawn into a disastrous war during 1846–1848. The victorious Americans now took the northern half of Mexico—Alta California, Nuevo Mexico, and Texas.
