Abstract

Wireless networks form an important part of communication. MANET (Mobile Ad-hoc network) is a much talked about field because of its abundant applications. Majority of MANETs work on RF spectrum as of now. Rise of multimedia applications and smart handheld devices have led to demand for higher bandwidth which has led to research in alternative fields of communication like Free Space Optics (FSO). In this paper we seek to provide a solution for MANET routing by using knowledge of node’s location and the directional transmission capability of FSO. This paper aims at developing and simulating a geographical routing protocol that we call Dir-DREAM (Directional Distance Routing Effect Algorithm for Mobility) for a Mobile Ad-hoc network where nodes have multiple FSO Antennas. The proposed protocol uses node’s location information and past information of interfaces over which packets from nodes are received for routing. We also perform ns-2 simulations to conduct performance evaluation of Dir-DREAM with FSO interfaces and DREAM over RF interface. Our proposed protocol performs well with multiple FSO interfaces and increases data packet delivery ratio, and decreases end to end delay. The designed protocol is observed to be performing well for varying node speed ranges.
