Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease characterized by abnormal stiffness or loss of elasticity in the elastic and muscular medium- and large-sized arteries. Although arteriosclerosis is regarded etiologically as a multifactorial disease, the most frequent cause is the deposition or infiltration of lipid-rich material (atheroma plaques) or atherosclerosis in the arterial wall, induced by local and systemic factors. Hypercholesterolemia and especially high plasma concentrations of low density lipoproteins (LDL) are a significant risk factor for the premature onset of atherosclerosis and ischaemic heart disease.
