Abstract

The pericardium is a fibroelastic sac surrounding the heart that influences its functionality, maintaining the heart in a mediastinal fixed position and protecting it against infections and tumoral invasions. The pericardium prevents excessive dilation of the heart, distributes hydrostatic forces and facilitates ventricular coupling during diastole.
