Abstract

In this paper, an acoustic band based software modem is designed and implemented for wireless communication between two personal computers. Its based on an investigation of the theoretical techniques required to develop a modem capable of digital data transmission in an indoor airborne acoustic environment, and the subsequent software development. Text files are used as information to demonstrate the operation and are being built under MATLAB code, modem uses 4-QAM modulation scheme. To realize modem in real-time, the software is developed that converts text in to voice, which is then modulated and transmitted over wired or wireless medium and received on the microphone of the receiver side. This received voice is then again converted to the text and displayed on the computer screen. The design encompasses a significant proportion of the signal synthesis and recovery process is performed digitally in software so that the burden on analogue RF hardware is minimized.
