Abstract

The variety of the phenomena that change the optical characteristics of the medium in the propagation path of radiation and in the optical system of the laser leads to degradation of the quality of the wavefront (WF), which is manifested by a significant increase in the angular divergence of the generated beam and by a reduction in the peak intensity upon focusing. Most fully the entire range of requirements to WF correctors in adaptive optics systems is met by POEs with adjustable shape of the reflecting surface, in which the WF distortion are compensated for by changing the shape of the mirror surface. In this case it is possible: (1) to fabricate cooled and uncooled adaptive POEs with a high optical damage threshold in a wide range of radiation exposures [158]; (2) to produce adaptive optics systems for the entire set of currently known schemes for generation of cw and repetitively pulsed laser radiation in wavelengths ranging from far-IR to ultraviolet; and (3) to manufacture adaptive POEs for correcting and measuring nonstationary phase distortions in the time interval up to several milliseconds, by selecting the substrate materials of the mirror surface which provide their predetermined static and dynamic deformation properties.
