Abstract
This chapter introduces the Holocaust in terms of its wider historiography. It provides an overview of investigations of Holocaust sites that have been undertaken to date and demonstrates how these fit into the development of genocide investigations more broadly. The various circumstances in which archaeological work may be undertaken are explored. Identifiable trends in approaches to the physical evidence from this period are outlined with a view to highlighting issues that require detailed consideration in the course of future investigations.
