Abstract

The first activity of the method framework for design science is Explicate Problem. The goal of this activity is to formulate the initial problem precisely, justify its importance, and investigate its underlying causes. In other words, it addresses the question:

What is the problem experienced by some stakeholders of a practice and why is it important?

This chapter describes how to answer the question using research methods as well as practice-oriented methods. The chapter also includes a discussion on the notion of problem, which is defined as a gap between the current state and a desirable state.
