High-Impact Weather Events over the SAARC Region

Abstract

The south west monsoon normally sets in over Uttarakhand by last week of June. However, in 2013, the monsoon current reached the region by mid-June. June 16 and 17 of this year were considered as one of the saddest days in the history of Uttarakhand, when unprecedented rains swelled the rivers both upstream and downstream, leading to devastating landslides and floods. This led to massive loss of life and extensive damage to property. The reason for this has been attributed to the extreme rain, along-with rampant unauthorized and mindless construction work with total disregard to nature and environment.
