Abstract
The whole purpose of your residency is to learn to function as an independent physician in whatever field you have chosen. Teaching and learning are an essential component to making a new doctor. If you are fortunate, you will have people around you who want to teach you all the essential components of your chosen specialty. If not, you will have to fend a little for yourself. This chapter is intended to do a few things:
-
1.
Help you understand what you need to learn in your clinical years and in residency.
-
2.
Help you locate resources to learn it.
-
3.
Encourage you to develop “micro-lectures” to give to students and junior residents under your care.
-
4.
Remind you of your role as a teacher to your patients.
-
5.
Your role as a teacher to the rest of the healthcare profession.
Experience is not what happens to you.
Experience is what you do with what happens to you.
—Aldous Huxley
