Abstract

This chapter aims to form a bridge enabling the student to move on from the methodological definition of adaptive predictive (AP) control to its practical application using the basic predictive control strategy. With this objective in mind, this chapter places special emphasis on the practical issues of AP control application to real processes, using the basic strategy of predictive control. These practical issues are illustrated by means of applying the methodology to the single-input single-output and multivariable control of a binary distillation column. This application was carried out in 1976 in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Alberta in Canada, in the context of a research and development program financed by the Juan March Foundation of Spain.
