Abstract

This chapter discusses the current state of forensic chemistry by describing many of the issues which have come about based on the perception of the discipline from television shows CSI Miami and CSI New York, to name a few. But even more relevant is the approach introduced by DNA testing, where protocols are utilized and strict standards are adhered to. In addition the development of DNA was not from a forensic prospective, but it evolved from a scientific basis following all the elements which science utilizes to investigate and apply new technology. Because of the lack of protocols and standards in the forensic discipline, it is practiced differently in the various state jurisdiction and localities. The chapter also discusses the various approaches being addressed to make improvements such as scientific working groups and federal commissions.
