Abstract
Nerve roots adopt relatively fixed positions inside the cauda equina. However, they may experience slight displacements following postural changes of the spine. Magnetic resonance images are obtained from patients in the supine position. This circumstance explains the predominant posterior location of the nerve roots within the cauda equina observed in such images. It is certain that postural changes of the lumbar column lead to displacements of the nerve roots within the dural sac. If the human body lies in the lateral position, the dural shifts laterally toward the lower region of the sac.
