Abstract
Nerve roots of the cauda equina adopt specific positions in relation to their neighboring nerve roots within the dural sac along their respective trajectories, and these tend to remain constant for each disposition of the vertebral column. Slight variations in the position of nerve roots within the cauda equina may be observed among patients. The processing of images of transversal sections of the dural sac and its contents in samples obtained from frozen bodies, as well as of magnetic resonance images from patients in supine position, enabled the production of maps called topograms of roots at each vertebral level along the lumbar vertebral column.
