Abstract
Dura mater is the outermost meningeal membrane enclosing the brain and spinal cord. At the spinal level, the dura mater is composed of collagen fibers and about 80 concentric dural laminas measuring approximately 250–400 μm. Each dural lamina has a thickness of 5 μm and is formed by thinner laminas (approximately 8–12 subunits). Collagen fibers are the laminas’ main component. These collagen fibers are oriented in various directions among the subunits that form each dural lamina, but they are always within the concentric plane of each dural lamina. The fibers do not traverse different dural laminas. Each collagen fiber measures approximately 0.1 μm and presents a smooth surface.
