Abstract

Axons with shorter trajectories are expected to have a more superficial location within the nerves, whereas axons traversing longer distances are expected to have a more central position, but this is not the case in peripheral nerves. Axons constantly fluctuate in their positions along the path of the nerve. The topographic map of the fascicles continually varies. Sunderland and Ray observed that the topography of fascicles varied 23 times in just 46 mm of length.
