Abstract

Patients are treated with glucocorticoids for a multitude of conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), organ transplantation, autoimmune diseases, and other inflammatory states. This chapter addresses supplemental steroid dosing (commonly called “stress-dose steroids”) for patients with tertiary (iatrogenic) adrenal insufficiency as a result of glucocorticoid (GC) use. The use of supplemental perioperative steroids in patients with adrenal insufficiency is controversial.
