Abstract

A strong earthquake not only triggered large numbers of co-seismic landslides but also contributed afterwards to an increase in rainfall triggered landslide activity and the development of devastating debris flows. In this paper, a typical catchment of the Hongchun gully near the epicenter of the Wenchuan earthquake (Sichuan Province, China) was chosen as a case study area, for a remote sensing analysis of landslide evolution and debris flow development prior to and after the Wenchuan earthquake. This study reveals that earthquake shaking severely disturbed surface strata, posing a potential continuing hazard in the region, as the slopes are very susceptible to future land sliding and debris flows under heavy rainfall conditions.
