Abstract
The chapter deals with properties of the response functions. It starts with causality and then examines symmetries. Next, Quantum Field Theory formalism is applied to underline the quantum nature of the hyperpolarizabilities extracted from time-dependent simulations. The chapter ends with the diagrammatic rules for calculation of hyperpolarizabilities.
