Abstract
The chapter illustrates the experience, made by one of the authors, in producing city plans with the support of GIS analysis. Experience that date back to 1989 before the definition of geodesign.
The problems emerged using the then available technologies are highlighted and how the new technological tools can eliminate those problems and make geodesign a viable approach is described. Afterwards the approach adopted by 3DGIS to make use of 3D modelling and visualization technique to facilitate the geodesign approach is illustrated. The evolution of the 3DGIS framework from 2D to 3D WebGIS for large-scale geodata over the web is described and the main 3D developments are discussed including web based 3D visualization and automatic generation of urban 3D environment via SDI. Some examples of application of this framework to 3D supported citizen participation projects are given. Finally some future work and points of discussion are suggested.
