Stopping Overshopping Model

Financial Therapy

Abstract

Along with financial consequences, emotional, interpersonal, and occupational problems have occurred as a result of compulsive buying. Following an overview of the history, epidemiology, and characteristics of compulsive buying disorder, this chapter presents a new model for the treatment of compulsive buying disorder, the stopping overshopping model. This comprehensive 12-week experience draws from psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavior therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, and acceptance and commitment therapy. The chapter concludes with an illustration depicting how to use the model in practice and a brief review of results from a randomized, controlled pilot study of the effectiveness of this model.
