Abstract
Neonaticide refers to the killing of a newborn within the first 24 h of life by a biological parent. In almost all neonaticide cases, the mother is the perpetrator; fathers are rarely known to commit neonaticide (Resnick 1970). Fathers do not typically have the same access to newborns as mothers, and the unique stressors associated with this crime do not necessarily apply to men (Koenen and Thompson 2008; Resnick 1970). Although it is recognized that men may also participate in neonaticide, many cases identify women as primary offenders and prior research focuses on them, typically in small samples (Beyer et al. 2008).
