Abstract

AD accounts for up to 75 % of all dementia cases. The differential diagnosis with other conditions is sometimes challenging since several disorders may produce similar symptoms to AD. Several CSF proteins are useful in the differential diagnosis between the neurodegenerative disorders causing dementia; however, there is some overlap among the proteins accumulated in various neurodegenerative, limiting the utility of such measures in the differential diagnosis of dementia. Medial temporal lobe atrophy on MRI and positive amyloid PET scans may be also useful to distinguish AD from other dementias in some cases.
