Abstract

This chapter is devoted to the research on Cold War Era properties in California, including structures devoted to research on space. Written from the perspective of an Architect and Historic Preservationist, the author focusses on the relevance to history and the challenges to preserve them. He stresses the difficulties in evaluating, interpreting and adaptively reusing historically significant buildings, structures, objects and sites. Included in the discussion are the four remaining orbiters, the Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour, along with the prototype Enterprise which, despite being less than 50 years old, are considered icons of the U.S. space program and, as such, eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
