Abstract
Scanning the development of research pertaining to labeling and stigma as it pertains to mental illnesses over the past 30 years reveals a deep connection between these fields of inquiry and the development of the American Sociological Association’s Section on the Sociology of Mental Health. As research in this domain progressed, the need for a specific home for that research within the ASA became apparent, and as the section grew and supported sessions specifically on labeling and stigma this domain of research was further enhanced. At this juncture sociological understandings of labeling and stigma stand as one of the major successes of the section on the Sociology of Mental Illness.
