Abstract

The features of the various reconstruction projects of comprehensive character, which were implemented in the Central London area mainly in the 1950s, are dealt in Part IV. This chapter considers the proposals submitted especially for the City of London which had as a basic promoter the Corporation of the City of London, namely NJ Aslan’s proposals, FJ Forty’s proposals and the Holden–Holford plan . A significant outcome of this work was the introduction by Holden–Holford of the “floor space index ” and the day-lighting code” in urban planning technique.

Notes

  1. 1.

This sentence has been quoted from the sub-title of the following book: The Institute of Bankers (1961), The City of London, as a centre of International Trade and Finance. Kent: Stapples Printers Ltd.

  2. 2.

This scheme was prepared by Aslan as his thesis for the diploma in Town Planning and Civic Architecture at the University of London in 1936, and this is the reason why it was not included in the review of independent plans for London (see Chap. 10).
