Abstract
I was thrilled to read the commentaries of Jennifer Windt, Karl Friston and Thomas Metzinger regarding the theoretical models which have, by now, propelled the scientific analysis of conscious states immeasurably forward of their position in 2008 when the William James lectures were given. A summary of these advances can be found in Hobson and Friston (Prog Neurobiol 98:82–98, 2012). The fact that no one spoke out against such modeling may be function of the author's bias in soliciting the commentaries. There is certainly a deeply entrenched opposition to a theory which compliments the antipsychological and reflex orientation of so many of my peers.
I was saddened by the refusal to comment by such respected scientists as Eric Kandel, David Foulkes, William Dement, and Michel Jouvet. Many of the refuseniks are either pro-Freudian and/or the authors of rival dream theories which may account for their reluctance to comment.
