Abstract

Neurology is the branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles. Neurological disorders tend to be chronic and disabling. The burden of neurological disorders in Arab countries is expected to increase as their populations age. Also, the high rate of consanguineous marriage in the Arab World and adoption of Western life styles contribute to the increasing frequency of neurological diseases. This chapter reviews all the data available from the Arab World concerning the number and training of neurologists and their working patterns. It also reviews the published papers related to neurology services in the region. Such data are vital in planning strategies for the treatment and prevention of nervous system disorders. Generally, there is variability in the availability of neurology expertise, training and services in the Arab countries, and many of them lack this important component of health care.
